WHO Sounds Alert Over Severe Lack of Obesity Jabs

Under a tenth of patients that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, caution the World Health Organization as it publishes its initial guidance on the therapies.

"The new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with holistic and ongoing support," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to widespread availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even under the present best projected case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, according to the WHO.

The recommendation urges governments and firms to widen availability, through measures like patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.

The injections replicate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

Patients typically start to lose weight within a few weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research indicates users may put most of the weight back on within a year of discontinuing the drug, because their typical appetite come back.
