During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
