The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
