In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
