The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
