Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
